Day 1: Diawling National Park
You will drive from Nouakchott towards Diawling National Park.
The Diawling National Park is located in the extreme southwest of Mauritania on the border with Senegal, which is marked by the river of the same name.
In this case, nature conservation does not end at the state border - since 2005, Diawling and its Senegalese counterpart, Djoudj National Park, have formed a transboundary biosphere reserve. Through the Ramsar Convention, this is recognized as a wetland of international importance and a habitat for bird species.
Now, what makes the national park worth protecting? First of all, there is its impressive species richness. There are 105 species of birds living on 46,000 ha, including 92 species of waterfowl alone. Gray and silver row, pink pelicans, glimpses, and, according to estimates, more than 100,000 cackling ducks annually.
Some birds use the national park, located in the Trarza region, only for wintering, while others spend the entire year here. Mammals and reptiles also find their place in Diawling.
You don't have to look long before you spot the first warthogs. And if you are lucky, you will also find primates, servals, and even the rare West African crocodiles in southern Mauritania.
After Lunch, you drive back to Nouakchott to spend the night.
Day 2: Chami
After breakfast, you leave Nouakchott heading towards the gold city Chami then you will drive for an hour to reach the coast where you will have lunch and spend the rest of the day relaxing and swimming in the ocean.
Day 3: Iwik
After breakfast you will drive towards Iwik then you will sail on a traditional boat that uses the wind to navigate. The captain will take you to see the birds that find shelter and food in the preserve of Banc d'arguin.
Banc d’Arguin National Park is a world heritage site. Two million birds make of this ornithological and nature sanctuary one of the three most important migratory bird breeding sites on Earth. Pelicans, flamingos broad-billed and sandpipers are common. Thanks to the mild climate, a scarce human presence, and the rich fishy ocean migratory birds winter here from Greenland Siberia Island Scotland making the largest water bird colony in the African continent.
In this tour, you will have the chance to sail with the Imragen (fishermen's tribe) in their traditional boats and enjoy watching the colony of the birds.
you will have Lunch on the boat, then you will return to shore. After that, you will drive straight to Nouakchott.
